My partner and I took a roadtrip up to Byron Bay and the surrounding beautiful hinterland last June. Although the wet winter was just beginning it made the sprawling greenery even more luscious. This corner of the world is growing on me much more than I thought possible, and I’m hoping to move there one day in the future. But for now, visits will have to do. I have enjoyed staying closer to home a bit more this year, realizing how many great regions we have to explore in our own Australian backyard, like the quaint and wonderful town of Newrybar. For anyone visiting the area I’ve written a little guide below..
NEWRYBAR
Where to stay: I stayed at Gaia Retreat which apart from a renowned Spa has incredible sweeping views across the hinterland. The Arthouse is where I’m hoping to stay during my next visit after eyeing it’s rustic aesthetic and hearing rave reviews.
How to get there: Newrybar is just a 15 minute drive outside of Byron Bay. I drove from my hometown of the Central Coast (near Sydney), but regular flights are easy to find through nearby Ballina Byron Airport.
Where to eat:
Harvest Cafe Newrybar is actually a Restaurant, Deli and Bakery not just one ‘cafe’. They each surpassed all of my expectations, and we made sure to arrive first thing Sunday morning for a fresh coffee, danishes and “cruffins” from the Harvest Bakery.
What to see and do:
Newrybar Merchants is a collective of creative local artisans and curators of fine goods that have set up a unique retail experience in one place. We spent hours rummaging through each room, while dreaming of decorating my new house with Tigmi Trading rugs, Beautiflora’s blooms and Paterson and Steele ceramics.
Killen Falls are located just a few minutes drive out of Newrybar, and one of the best waterfalls I’ve seen in Australia. Standing behind the waterfall after days of heavy rain was equally magic as it was nerve wracking.
